HOME SKIN CARE PROCEDURES

Despite being locked down (or locked in) we still need to express our inner beauty and to take care of ourselves. Whilst most of our treatments are Doctor-only we have selected just a few simple gestures and procedures that you can do yourself at home – and see the results.

Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD)

This is a gentle technique that takes years to master. MLD therapists are highly skilled and can assist the removal of fluid from under the skin to out via the kidneys. MLD stimulates the lymph system and the parasympathetic nervous system; it is very relaxing and therapeutic. MLD is used to treat lymphoedema, lipoedema and fluid retention in medical patients and after invasive surgery. We use it for the benefit of improving tissue nutrition and oxygenation and reducing puffy eyes. Our long-standing friend and colleague Sossi Yerissian (www.sossi.co.uk) will guide you through a very simple MLD. Follow her gentle movements using the pressure of a fine feather.

For this no equipment is needed; just your time, concentration and relaxing environment. Ideally share the technique with a friend – you treat her face and vice-versa.

Deep Cleansing Mask

This is a gentle glycolic acid cleansing mask for open pores, minor pigment irregularities, congested skin and as a complexion improver. It takes about 10 minutes and can be repeated every week. This mask can be performed on your own but as a special treat between friends or family why not do each other?

This is not recommended for skin of colour as an at-home procedure.

Ingredient list

  • Gentle cleanser of your choice; ZO, Mene and Moy, Cerave.
  • Mene and Moy System 10% glycolic acid mask
  • Recovery cream – Cerave moisturizing cream or lotion
  • Sunblock if during the day
  • Clean flannels x 2
  • Clean face towel
  • Wooden spatula or teaspoon
  • Box of tissues
  • Access to hot water
  • Gloves if you have sensitive skin or plan to perform several treatments at once.

Instructions

Perform this in your bathroom with access to hot and cold running water, a basin and mirror.

Set and start the timer on your phone for 5 minutes.

Wash your face with the cleanser; remove make-up. Dry gently with the towel.

Using the bowl of the teaspoon, measure 1 tsp per half-face and apply a thin layer to the face using the thin end as a spatula. Start with the chin, forehead, around the mouth and end with the cheeks and around the eyes. Do not allow it to get into the eyes.

It will prickle for a minute or so. Leave the mask on for up to three minutes maximum. Your timer will ring soon. At this point you must proceed to the next step.

Using the face flannel, wash the product off with plenty of water. Keep your eyes closed to protect them. Acid cannot hurt the eye but can be unpleasant. If you do feel that the product has got into your eye, keep washing with plenty of water.

Make sure that no product remains in the pores. Check that there are no opaque white spots of mask remaining; if so wash for longer. Dry with the towel or a tissue.

Your skin should feel perfectly smooth and look wonderfully bright.

At this point apply a fine layer of Cerave moisturiser to re-establish the skin barrier. If you are going out, then remember to apply sunblock before you leave the house.

Smoothing, cleansing, draining and moisturising – fast track beauty. 30 minutes +

This is a more in-depth procedure for older, thicker or sun-exposed skin, acne, oily or break-out prone skin. It can also be used with care for the routine cleansing and stimulating of normal skin. Using ZO meical skin care products it involves a cleanse, exfoliation, skin polish, application of a soothing recovery mask and can be completed with an MLD treatment. The final application of cream is the ZO best-seller Instant Pore Refiner. This mask can be performed on your own but as a special treat between friends or family why not do each other?

This procedure is not recommended for skin of colour as an at-home procedure.

Ingredient list

  • Gentle cleanser of your choice
  • ZO Complexion renewal pads 1 tub
  • ZO exfoliating polish x 1 tub
  • ZO professional recovery masks x 10 (hyaluronic acid/green tea/arbutin)
  • ZO instant pore refiner x 1 tube
  • Wooden spatula
  • Face flannels x 2
  • Box tissues x 1
  • Gloves if you have sensitive skin or plan to perform several treatments.

Instructions

Perform this in your bathroom with access to hot and cold running water, a basin and mirror.

Wash your face with the cleanser; remove make-up. Dry gently with the towel.

Using one pad from the ZO complexion renewal tub gently wipe this over your face, concentrating on the problem areas such as the nose, chin and any spots. Take care around the delicate eye area. Keep your eyes closed to protect them. Acid cannot hurt the eye but can be unpleasant. If you do feel that the product has got into your eye stop using the pad and wash with plenty of water.

The complexion renewal pad will have a pleasant tingling sensation which is normal.

Once the pad has been passed over the face a few times dry your face with a tissue. There is no need to wash off any remaining solution.

Now it is time for the exfoliating polish.

Using the bowl of the teaspoon, measure 1 heaped tsp for your face. Use your fingers to gently rub in small circles, polishing the face. Start with the chin, forehead, around the mouth and end with the cheeks and around the eyes. Do not allow it to get into the eyes. If this happens wash the face with plenty of clean water.

Using the face flannel, wash the product off with plenty of water. Keep your eyes closed to protect them. Acid cannot hurt the eye but can be unpleasant. If you do feel that the product has got into your eye, keep washing with plenty of water.

Next step – recovery mask.

The mask is a bit wet so at this stage you should find a place to relax and allow the nutrients in the mask to soak in, if you are not to drip everywhere.

Open the package of the mask over a surface such as a dinner plate (the contents can leak out) and then unfold the mask. You will see that there are eye, nose and mouth holes. This may be better with a friend but otherwise gently place the mask over your face, aligning the holes so that you can breathe.

Now it is time to relax.

You may leave the mask on for up to 10 minutes to be absorbed and work its magic. Some people like to gently massage over the mask but this is not necessary. The warmer you are the quicker the nutrients are absorbed.

Back into the real world…

Once you have had your relaxation remove the mask. Your skin might still be a bit wet but most of the nutrients will have been absorbed. Dry any excess product off with a tissue and allow your skin to breathe.

At this stage you may either finish by applying the Instant Pore Refiner, or proceed to the Manual Lymph Drainage. For that extra 10 minutes you will really see the benefit of simulating the lymph system in the face and neck and allowing the cells to remove their metabolic debris. For puffy eyes it is an absolute essential.

Follow the instructions given by Sossi. MLD is a very gentle manoeuvre performed with dry clean hands on dry clean skin.
